In the very centre of Siauliai, on the main Vilniaus street (No. 188) there is a local monument of architecture – Siauliai Didzdvaris gymnasium. One of the oldest schools in Northern Lithuania was established in 1898 and for long was known as Girls’ gymnasium and Secondary school No. 5. Today
In 2001 – 2002 there were 1171 students at the gymnasium, i.e. 232 primary school children, 338 students in the years 5 – 8 and 601 gymnasium students (out of which 181 1st gymnasium year students, 149 – 2nd gymnasium year students, 160 - 3rd gymnasium year students and 111 – 4th gymnasium year students) .
This year the gymnasium will see off the 79th generation of school leavers.
A big number of students requires a big number of teachers, thus, 90 teachers were involved in education of students this year: 6 expert teacher , 30 teachers of methodology and 37 senior teachers. The majority is still hold by the English language teachers – 15.
You can meet them in 37 classrooms, 2 computer labs, in the gym and assembly hall, the library and modern reading-room and a cosy canteen.
The school is successfully run by Vaidas Bacys, Headmaster with the help of the team of five deputies.
Since 1997 the school is a member of UNESCO Associated Schools network and since 1999 is involved in EU Socrates projects (Comenius I and Lingua E). The school community is full of ideas leading to participation in a number of national projects, such “School inner audit”, “Assessment of students’ achievements” which are organised by the Ministry of Education of Lithuania; “I can” which is coordinated by the Centre of Civil initiatives. More than 300 students of “Seltinis” group have promote Lithuanian folk dance performing in England, Italy, Russia, the Ukraine, France, Poland and Germany. One of the school priorities, cooperation with our partners abroad, has been effectively carried on through student and teacher exchanges in Denmark, Sweden and Poland this year. The gymnasium is proud of its Debate Club the members of which are winners of national competitions. It is worth mentioning Inga Motiejunaite, the 4th gymnasium year student who participated in Worl Debate contest in Singapore as a Lithuanian debate team member. Regularly organized exhibitions of the Art Studio add to the beauty of the school interior. Each month the Scouts hold jamborees in and outside the school, develop their practical skills and do a lot of activities of which camping is the most popular. There is the School Museum open to present and former students. On special occasions the school newspaper “Second Home” is published.
