History

The history of Kärdla Secondary School goes back to 1830.

The old schoolhouse was built in 1935.The beginning of secondary education dates back to1940.

The new schoolhouse was built in 1975.

2250 students have finished Kärdla Secondary School and over 300 teachers have been teaching them.

In 2002 will be the 55th class of seniors.

Kärdla Secondary School is the biggest school on Hiiumaa.This year our 795 students are streamed into 30 grades:639 junior high school and 156 senior high school students.The teachers` staff is 53.

Today

1996 is the beginning of course system in senior high school of Kärdla Secondary School.The year is devided into 5 terms.Each term lasts for 7 weeks where the last  is an assessment week.During the term students study 5 or 6 subject.The goal of the system is to have an opportunity to choose elective subjects  besides compulsory ones.Elective subjects would prepare students for entering higher education institutions.

The class of computer studies started in 1990 then stopped for a while and continued in 1995.

The school Internet connection was founded March 3,1996.A special computer classroom was established in 1998.In 1999 the whole school Internet system started its work.

Traditions

Kärdla Secondary School has participated in the Baltic Sea Project in Finland, Sweden and Germany.We want to keep the Baltic Week idea alive.We hope that the partnership and the cooperation between the schools and the students will be closer in the future.Guest Students` Programme with Norrtälje has lasted for 10 years and we hope that it will continue.We have had exchange student programmes with Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands and Venezuela.Besides Estonian English, German, Finnish, and Russian are taught in our school.

The Students` Council of our school consists of 17 students from grades 7-12.The Council is an active organiser of out-of-school activities, helps to keep contact and solve misunderstandings between the students and the staff.

Traditions are dear to our school.The First of September-the first schoolday, Teachers` Day, Freshmen`s Party, School Anniversary, Christmas and Flag Day.We have our "school Misses and Misters". DJ and Mermaid contests, Fancy Dress Balls.The most popular hobby clubs in our school are handicraft, nature, aerobics, choirs, drama, folkdance, pottery and cheramics.

The goal

Everybody is welcome to our school despite the age, living place, economic conditions and social background. A student and his academic progress are valued in our school.

"Healthy mind in a healthy body" is our motto.Thus importance is attached to the development of the sense of environmental responsibility in our students. In our school we stimulate new patterns of behaviour and lifestyles. Our general task is to raise conciousness to an active appreciation of the demands of the Global Ecosystem.
